What's Your Favorite...with WuShock
Ever wonder what it’s like to be a walking shock of wheat? WuShock, the Wichita State University mascot who turns 60 years old this month, offers his perspective.
Favorite part of game night: Having the opportunity to get out and be with my peeps. There’s just nothing like being surrounded by 10,000 fellow Shockers.
Favorite pre-game ritual: Before a game, it’s nice to just have a little “me time,” a couple of minutes to get myself centered before they turn on the bright lights—then it’s go time!
Favorite song to get you pumped up: If the Shocker Pep Band plays it, I like it. “Hail Wichita”? Like it. Fight song? Like it. “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes? Love it.
Favorite sport: I like them all.
Favorite workout: My workouts usually consist of bleacher running and deep-knee bends. They’re both great for my glutes.
Favorite kind of fan: A Shocker.
Favorite way to get the crowd going: If you’ve ever been to a Shocker game, you know I don’t have to do much to get the crowd going (our fans are never ones to sit on their hands). That said, everybody loves a little break-dancing wheat.
Favorite thing about Wichita: I love the diversity of Wichita. Plus, all of the opportunities this city offers our students—things they could never get in a traditional college town—are incredible.
Favorite opponent to pummel (during a game, of course): I get a certain satisfaction out of beating Creighton. They’ve always been a thorn in my side.
Favorite WSU memory: 1981, The Battle of New Orleans. Enough said.
Motto: “It’s a great day to be a Shocker” because it always is.
Favorite athlete: There’s no way I could ever pick just one. Antoine Carr, Denise Brungardt-Steenstra, Joe Carter, Xavier McDaniel, Desiraye Osburn and Dave Stallworth are just a few of my favorites.
What would people be surprised to find out about you? I’m allergic to gluten.
