THE SHOP: Aspen Boutique, 4724 E. Douglas, 316-682-6784. (Mon.–Thurs. 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 10 a.m.–6 p.m.)
ATMOSPHERE: Aspen Boutique (formerly Aspen Traders) recently underwent an impressive $150,000 makeover. Visit the store, located near the intersection of Oliver and Douglas, and you’ll see a blue paint job on the exterior and 1920s-style French doors. There are also stylish chandeliers, an impressive checkout area and large aspen logs across one area. Inside, the shop has a cozy, vintage feel.
KEY PEOPLE: James Smits moved to Wichita with his wife, Monica, in 1987 from Colorado Springs, Colorado for his job as a geologist with Beren Corporation. A year later, he put his knowledge of stones to a more luxurious use when the pair opened Aspen Traders. Now, James handles the jewelry while Monica manages the clothing and accessories. “Every time we buy for a new season, we’re searching for the look that will make our customers proud of what they’re wearing,” says Monica. Besides running Aspen Boutique, James and Monica own the building that houses Myoptix Fashion Eyewear and Frank & Margaret.
WHAT YOU’LL FIND: Aspen Boutique is outfitted with more than 150 brands from a host of fashionable designers. James and Monica are particular about the store’s merchandise. “The current buyer is more brand-conscious than ever,” says James. Clothing by Karen Kane is a vintage style that adds flair to any contemporary wardrobe. Westin has boho-chic clothing, and Johnny Was offers frilly, flowing Bohemian items with embroidered accents and silk. Jan Michaels’ clothing has an Egyptian, antique style. Lynn Ritchie is a popular brand that is both comfortable and stylish. The shop also has a limited selection of menswear.
The jewelry varies from colorful and elaborate, as with Wendy Mink’s pieces, to shiny and simple, such as designs by Flying Lizard. Ayala Bar jewelry incorporates circular patterns and cloth in an exotic look. Seasonal Whispers is a sparkly brand that showcases copper, gold and mixed metal designs. Aspen Boutique also has a handpicked selection of turquoise and sterling silver. Besides clothing and jewelry, the store offers a wide selection of bath products, like Mistral Rose Petal soap and Zum Bar goat’s milk soap. For something more decorative, there are Gianna Rose Atelier soaps shaped like Cocker Spaniels, Scottish terriers, elephants and Labrador retriever puppies. There are glasses, scarves, oils and more. All of the home décor items, from the curtains to the chandeliers, are for sale.
Many of the sales associates have worked at the store for more than 10 years and know customers by name. “When you come in, you get a personal shopper who helps you find a look that’s all yours,” says Monica. Even Kirstie Alley is a fan of Aspen Boutique. One holiday season, the movie star bought all of the store’s Christmas décor, according to Monica. She also autographed a dressing room wall.
WICHITA VERDICT: Aspen Boutique’s extensive renovation makes the store as stylish as its contents. For head to toe shopping that pleases customers of all ages and personalities, Aspen Boutique is a choice that’s as fun as it is sophisticated.
