Coffeehouse Snobs

Drew and I came from lands of plentiful coffee shops. In Washington, Tryst was a favorite haunt of hip 20 and 30-somethings looking for a caffeine fix in a cool environment. A Nashville native, Drew likes Fido, a coffeehouse frequented by country music stars. At our alma mater, Mizzou, there’s the Cherry Street Artisan.
Well, here there’s the new Meads Corner Coffeehouse, where the lights flick on early and are extinguished late—all the while, Fair-Trade coffee brews. Ummm… I can smell it now, and actually I need it now (as I’m experiencing that late afternoon slump.)
The space is long and scattered with hi-boy tables and chairs,... Read more »

Good Gifts

Black Friday came and went, without me.

Instead of braving the throng of type-A shoppers, Drew and I ate a leisurely breakfast with his grandparents, walked his family’s dog, Ellie, played with their new kitten, Fred Lovell and watched The Aviator over queso and red wine with some good friends. It was a lovely day.

But now it’s December 2nd, and the Advent calendar shows 23 days left until Christmas. The time for procrastination is over; it’s time to get shopping. But man, we’re also in the worst economic recession since the Great one in the ’30s.

I’ve read lots on how this tight economic situation is actually an opportunity to be really Read more »

Christmas Cheer

Welcome to Wichita’s new blog written by the newest members of Wichita magazine’s editorial staff, Drew and Emily Bratcher. Both came to the plains by way of Washington, DC and are eager to explore their digs. Stay tuned every Tuesday and Thursday for updates of their favorite things about Wichita—you might just (re)discover your own!

I’ve been away, which is my excuse for neglecting the Wichita Wanderings blog. Very sorry.

My best friend lives in Manhattan (New York City’s Manhattan) and at “the most wonderful time of the year,” it’s got to be the best place on the planet. The department store windows are festive with elaborate decoration, the huge sparkling Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, not to... Read more »

Last night, Drew had to go reporting, and I came along to keep him company. (Look for his story on the death and rebirth of Greensburg, Kansas, in the January issue) En route to our eastern Kansas destination, we were blown away by gale-force winds. It actually ripped off the Jetta’s driver side mirror.

We were most taken aback by the unexpected grandeur of the plains—and more than that, the cinematic clouds... Read more »

Swaying on Election Day

This morning Emily and I voted at the Baptist church down the street from our Old Town apartment. It was a a quick and somewhat subdued affair. The thick-carpeted, cleared-out church office was dim and quiet. We waited less than 30 seconds to cast our ballots.

With all the expectations of record turnouts, it was a little anticlimactic. You want to shake someone's hand, give someone a hi-five, or be spirited away to an election day party after voting, or at least I do. You want to feel the effect of your vote.

Two years ago, in DC, I covered the Democratic party's election night bash. As the results came in, and it became clear that the Dems had taken the House and the Senate, the scene was one of utter elation. The ballroom at the Hilton erupted in dancing and... Read more »

Drew and I’ve been here in Wichita for nearly six weeks—time enough to find a few favorite eateries. Here are my top picks for delicious sips and bites downtown.

Fall is my favorite. It made sense that I fell for my husband during a season when the world turned gold—red, orange, and yellow, too. And when gentle winds carried the slightest chill. Fall is boots, jeans, and sweater weather, which happens to be my outfit of choice (preferably Frye boots, which I don't have but covet, a good pair of perfect-fitting jeans, and a soft pullover,... One of my favorite buildings in Washington is the National Geographic Society's headquarters on 17th St, a couple of blocks from The Washingtonian magazine, where I worked for two years. Between interviews, I would sometimes duck into the gift shop to peruse posters of exotic places and thumb old covers of National Geographic. Apart from strolling Wisconsin Avenue, where the embassies stand in stately... Read more »

I was a Whole Foods junkie at home. My friend, Natalie, introduced me to the natural and organic grocery store, and I grew addicted to the rich smells of cheese, the dark healthy greens of the spinach and zuccini, unmatched avocados (except for the ones growing on the trees in my late grandpa's San Diego backyard), aisle-long shelves brimming with vitamins. Peanut butter,... Read more »

Wichita Wanderings: Signatures on Sunday Afternoons

In four short weeks in Wichita, Emily and I have already begun to craft some rituals. On Sunday afternoons, after church and a turn through the grocery store to stock up for the week, we've begun crashing at Watermark Books to sip coffee, catch up on wedding thank-you notes, peruse the new book stacks, and read The New York Times.

Call me old school, but there's nothing like sitting back with the... Read more »
